A Cut of Sockeye That’s Perfect for Maximizing Flavors

July 24th, 2023

Turning Sockeye Salmon Strips into Poppable Pieces of Protein

I’ll start by saying this: always consider the cut. Because this week’s celebration of sockeye is a testament to how different cuts of salmon lend themselves to different, delicious uses in the kitchen. The shape, size, and thickness of a cut of sockeye (or any species, for that matter) can serve as inspiration for how you might best like to prepare it.

A few examples: If you like crispy seared salmon, you might prefer to sear up a thin, flat fillet that has a large swatch of salmon skin. If you like baking salmon in a sauce, you might like a thicker fillet so that the fish has more time to bask in the flavors around it. If you have a pack of Sockeye Captain Cuts in your freezer, you might be inspired to prepare it with a sandwich in mind.

I’m particularly inspired by a unique cut of sockeye for Wild Alaskan Company: Sockeye Salmon Strips. These thinly-sliced, skin-on slivers of salmon are ideal for fun, flavorful treatments like sauces, marinades and rubs. Their cut gives the home cook plenty of surface area with which to use as a culinary canvas.

From there, you’re a quick pan-fry or air-fry away from poppable pieces of protein that are perfect for scattering over salads, stacking into tortillas or sandwiches, or even enjoying as a snack.
