Here’s Why The Unexpected is My New Best Friend

October 9th, 2020

With the Unknown Comes Opportunity — Especially in the Kitchen

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus wrote, “If you do not expect the unexpected you will not find it, for it is not to be reached by search or trail.” Which is fine by me, because I’m honestly starting to get real comfy with the unexpected — or at least trying to stay focused on its quirky bright side.

With the unexpected also comes adventure. And creativity. And spontaneity. This eternal not-knowing-ness brings with it an evergreen nudge from the universe to stay on one’s feet, to embrace imaginativeness and remain resourceful. It invites us to settle down with the great mystery, and let the uncharted become our compass.

And for me, one of the most fun places to let the uncharted shine is in the kitchen, where I can enjoy my wild-caught seafood to explore a whole world of unexpected dishes.

I never expected, for example, that I’d one day know how to make my favorite Japanese snack, seafood onigiri, or how to prepare tea-smoked fish. I never imagined a world of fruit-forward seafood recipes, or fish wrapped in puff pastry, or that I’d turn my wild-caught catch into mousses and spreads. And I bet you didn’t expect that I’d come through with that salmon souffle recipe I talked about a few weeks ago, but here you go!

So, when I receive my box of seafood each month, I don’t simply see 24 portions of frozen seafood — I see a world of unexpected glory.

Live wild...and stay curious!
